Key Diseases to Watch For
-
Babesiosis (Redwater): Caused by Babesia divergens, this disease is transmitted by the Ixodes ricinus tick. It leads to red-coloured urine, fever, weakness, and potentially death if untreated.
-
Anaplasmosis and Theileriosis: Less common in the UK but more prevalent in some parts of Europe and Africa. Globalisation and climate change may increase risk over time.
-
Tick-borne fever: Caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum, leading to fever, lethargy, and reduced immune function, making cattle more vulnerable to other diseases.
